The Inverse
The Inverse is an accidental art project that began with a father’s love of photography and ended with a son’s love of the surreal. The vision of a 40 something banker is distilled by a 40 something artist 40 years later to produce a collection of surreal images showcasing 1980s Americana: The Inverse.
There is another world, but, it is in this one.
– Paul Éluard
The Inverse is a perspective that exists as an inversion of our reality. It is shaped purely by light as all perspectives are. It does not rest parallel nor does it reside in a mirror. Philosophically, one doesn’t negate the other nor does one flip or mirror the other. The Inverse exists only at the specific point where reality and its inverse meet; not beyond and not before.
This concept is born of the act of choosing to see past the point where the two meet. They exist at the same time and in the same space; each existing because of the other. Given the right perspective one can easily move from one to the other at any point in time or space, but you cannot see both at once.
Reality and The Inverse are made up of the exact same things yet they can never be the same. If one is saturated the other cannot be. If one is light the other cannot be. If one is perceived the other cannot be. The Inverse is a perspective that has to be sought even though it is persistently present. It is a perspective that has to be chosen.
